As Evans & Tate Senior Winemaker, Matthew Byrne plays a pivotal role in driving the stylistic development and quality across Evans & Tate’s award-winning portfolio of wine.
It is a role he has had since joining the winery in 2001. Throughout that time Evans & Tate has enjoyed outstanding wine show success through an emphasis on site selection, vineyard management and wine style evolution.
Matthew has completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (Wine Science) from Charles Sturt University and Associate Degree in Viticulture and Bachelor of Horticulture (Horticulture Management) (Honours) from Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia.
He began his career 18 years ago and has completed vintages in Margaret River and Mildura, in Australia, and Koelenhof, South Africa, and Felton, California, USA.
Matthew is also a recognised judge on the Australian wine show circuit. He has been a Senior Judge at the Royal Perth Wine Show for the past three years, as well as at the Qantas Wine Show of WA, Swan Valley Wine Show and the Margaret River Wine Show.
Matthew has also been a Judge at the Cairns, Geographe and Blackwood Valley Wine shows.
He was named as one Wine Business Magazine's 50 Stars of 2013 after an incredible year, which saw Evans & Tate dominate the Qantas Wine Show of WA and take home 7 trophies.
Matthew is based in Margaret River and is a passionate surfer, diver and fishing enthusiast. When he’s not making wine Matthew can usually be found at the beach or on a boat.
